Kansas City

The Kansas City trip was indeed a blast when all was said and done. Besides walking in the heat, I enjoyed the Kemper Contemporary Museum and the Blue Gallery in Kansas City's crossroads arts district. I thought it would have been bigger though seeing it from the outside. I particularly liked the "Reflections" exhibition at the Kemper. There was a nice 3D piece by a Japanese artist of two geishas was interesting.

The owners of the Blue Gallery had a dog there named Stella. She played with the group and was just being absolutely adorable. After finishing up observing, I'd have to say going to Olive Garden was definitely the highlight of the day. The ride to KC and back to Wichita was fun also.

Kansas City Trip- BG 3

I had a great time in Kansas City visitng the museum and gallerys. As much as Monika may not like hearing this, I did enjoy myself more just hanging out with anyone, than I did at the museums. Don't get me wrong, great stuff and it was nice to look at, but being with everyone made it much more fun!...espeically the food at Olive garden... mmmmm. Glad we all got the chance to go!

Are you a victim of boredom?

I don't know about you, but I constantly hear that there is nothing to do in Wichita. But that can't be further from the truth. There is tons of stuff to do here, you just need to know where to look. There's Tuesday night comedy reviews, dance lessons, concerts, poetry readings, festivals, First Fridays, Final Fridays, demos, artists talks, book signings, and occasional ball, and tons more! One way to start is picking up the GO! Wichita section in Friday's Eagle newspaper. The GO! has many wonderful listings, maps, reviews, etc. It features schedules, locations, times, and cover charges on Final Fridays and First Fridays. Next is checking out ROKICT.com for weekly events. When I say that there is always something going on, this is the place to check out. Of course, you can always check out Facebook. ROKICT.com is on there (Jared ICT Brinkman), Rock Island Live, Vagabond, First Friday (Adam Hartke Records), James Gates(Local Comedian), Final Friday listings, and so much more!

1400 W. Museum BLVD is having Family Artventure. It's Free admission to the museum every saturday, all year round. Artenture is from 11am-3pm and it's fun that the whold family can join in. Tour the galleries for inspiration for the featured project of SUMMER LANDSCAPES before heading down to the family studio to create your own work of art!

American Cancer Soceity's Annual Cattleman's Ball at Old Cowtown Museum. Saturday 5pm-12am. Tickets are now on sale at www.cattlemansballwichita.org. Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School in Wichita

In Brooklyn Molly Crabapple began Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School in 2005. It quickly exploded into an international franchise. A Dr. Sketchy's event is part burlesque cabaret, part life drawing class. It is a mixture of all things vaudeville, burlesque, cabaret, and hand-drawn. 'Art monkeys'(artists that attend) are treated to exotic modelling scenarios in a fast-paced environment, drawing contests during the breaks. So if you want to expand your horizons on life drawing, keep your eyes open for listing of Dr. Sketchy. If you visit the site, they will provide a list of where all of the branches are located.

Mood lighting anyone?

So as I was browsing Notcot.org, I discovered Andrej Belic's scuba photography. Andrej is a part-time Austrian photographer, and has photographed dives from his travels around the world. While this imagery brings back fond memories of Pixar's "Finding Nemo," I think it also shows a particular attention to composition and lighting. There are mysterious scenes of rusted ships' hulls peaking through dark and murky water, and glimmering shoals of fish, not to mention camouflaged crabs and crabby sharks. It kind of makes you want to go on an adventure...Climb to the top of Mount Wanahaukalugi or something.

playground apartments: Tokyo

They are apartments in Tokyo designed to look like the inside of a fast food Play area. The designer says that the apartments are designed this way - with limited space inside that requires bending and cramming - to heighten instinct and enrich the quality of life.

Seems like a nice way to say there's no room in Tokyo...everyone lives in tiny apartments. Fun!

Are you warm, are you real, Mona Lisa? Or just a cold and lonely, lovely work of art?

An article came out this week about a study on some of Leonardo Da Vinci’s paintings, the Mona Lisa being one of them. Da Vinci used a technique in his paintings called “sfumato” (new term for me) in which he basically used various layers of paint to give his paintings a certain quality. On some of his paintings, Da Vinci used up to 30 layers of paint. Some of the layers were about the half the thickness of human hair.

Well, in order to understand his use of this technique, scientist used a super duper high-tech tool to study Da Vinci’s paintings. This tool can actually determine what pigments Da Vinci mixed for each layer of paint.

So a machine can tell me what Da Vinci mixed in each of the 30 individual layers of paint? Wow.

I don’t know what my inner nerd is more fascinated, with Da Vinci’s technique or the super duper high- tech tool.
