As I have said before, and I will continue to say, looking at art is one of the most valuable experiences that an artist/designer can have. As you will learn, looking is a lot harder than it seems, so it should be practiced often. The following link has a lot of great artists/designers/and just a great deal of fun stuff: www.notcot.org
Also, follow the link below to see one of William Kentridge's drawing animations. We will talk about these in class because they are amazing and can teach us a great deal about the process of drawing.
Happy Drawing!

After seeing William Kentridge's video on youtube, I see why Monika thinks he is the "best artist ever." Not only does he commuicate well with the charcoal stick or pencil, but I found his creativity and vision astonishing. Papers and pages come alive and smears and smudges have a lot to say. There is also a poignant humor and wit in this video.
ReplyDeleteI watched two other videos at the end of this one that were interesting too. The first is "Animation Like William Kentridge: Face Movie". Here the earsed images and smudges are as important and interesting as the drawn faces.
The second video, another by Kentridge, "Felix in Exile", I found riveting. I could watch it probably 10 more times and see other things in it. I don't want to give away the strong narrative, but the way 3 major characters, morphing pages, animated newspapers, water, and stars all flow together is worth the 8 plus minuets this video takes. Also, watch for the artist's head. This is a haunting, gentle but brutal story that I will think about for a long, long time. Hope to bump into everyone at Final Friday. ann
